feedback on "FOOD INC."
Today in professor McCormick's class we watched we a documentary on the
food industry called "FOOD INC". I found it very interesting and it made alot of
good points. It also made me thing about how I eat and my diet and made me
think if i should change some things. Some of the farmers who are paid to do
what they do i wonder how they feel about being part of such an organization.
Personally I don't think I could live with doing that for the rest of my life . I
would feel some kind of guilt knowing I was doing such a thing to animals and
also causing a disruption to the healthn of humans. Being enslaved to a
company in this situation to me is like being obligated to kill people or cause
diseases and extreme health problems. One thing I didnt know is that chickens
grow in about 3 months or so and with they're method it grows in about 49
days. I don't care how much money I would get I wouldn't want to be enslaved
by a company to do wrong and harm the health of animlas and humans. I felt
sorry for the mother who lost her child. I would have so mcuh anger for the
people who produce contaminated fod not caring who it harmed. I admire her
for trying to fight for her right because of what happened to her son. My
favorite person from the documentary wwas the farmer who's name i can't
recall but he raised his animals naturally. I think he was a strong person he
tried his best to keep his farm open and functioning well. He had a desire to
produced good and healthy food not only for him but for the people who
brought from him.He felt good about what he was doing and that it was the
right thing whichi do agree. Even though companies and others tried to shut
him downhe didnt let that phase him. He believed in eating right and if we are
to eat meat to make sure it was good enough to intake. This film also insipired
me to encourage others to eat better for themsleves watch what they ptu into
their bodies. As for me i wwill watch my diet more because after watching that
it turned my mind form eating meat. This also helped me to be wise of what
goes on in this food industry because who knows what's next.

culture/heritage essay
Natalie Grimes

ENG 101
Professor McCormick
In the small island of Barbados around the 1900”s life was simple and sweet.
As we know this was a traditional era and a lot of foods we’re prepared from
natural grown fruits and vegetables. One of the most made dishes is a desert called
black cake. My family is still known to make it today even though the ingredients
are slightly different. In writing this essay I will further explain the difference
between the two and deeper into the origin of the ingredients used.
During big holidays and such as weddings, Christmas and Easter this cake is
made as a traditional desert. The cake’s main ingredients is grounded up fruits like
cherries, raisins, prunes currents, mixed peel(orange rind) and are fermented over
time. Usually my grandmother would ferment them over the year and for the
holidays she would use it for the cake. The fruits we’re grown fresh from my trees
in the back yard or grown in the fields. Fruits today are not as fresh and are sprayed
with pesticides and chemicals to keep them “fresh” but all the chemicals do is ruin
the natural structure and strip them from their natural being. Some fruits are a lot
grown in labs and made are made from replicas. There are some factories that clone
fruits and of course when you do that the fruits produced become less healthy and
they sell them everyday in supermarkets and some people have no clue what they
are in taking into their bodies.
Other ingredients such as butter and sugar we’re mixed into the fruit. Of
course one of the main ingredients in butter is milk. Milk was processed in a factory
called Pine Hill Diary which had their own pasteurized cows to produce the milk. At
another factory called Robert’s manufacturing the butter was produced using palm
tree butter and mellow cream. In this day in age cows are put in intensive
confinement which leaves them unable to nurse their young and be free. Instead of
being treated like animals they are mostly like milk machines.
According to David Goldstein, Helen Pearson, U.S. department of
agriculture and U.S. Environmental protection Agency the cows “are
genetically manipulated and pumped full of antibiotics and hormones that
cause them to produce more milk”. Being that humans consume their milk
they expose themselves to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and
cancer. Sugar was originally made from sugar cane. When it was processed
into crystal form it comes out as brown sugar because it still contained the
natural minerals unlike white sugar. White sugar is stripped of the sugar cane syrup
also known as molasses which makes the brown sugar crystals the color that they
are. Molasses contains the natural vitamins and minerals that the body needs so it
makes brown sugar more of a healthy choice.
Eggs are also an ingredient in any cake. My mother and her mother rose
their own chickens back then. Because of what they we’re fed things like grain,
broken corn and scratch grain which kept them healthy so their eggs we’re produced
more nutritious. In the U.S. as well as cows, chickens are also injected with
hormones to fatten them up which give us who buy the chicken more meat.
Hormones are produced in animals and humans which control growth, development
and reproduction. A certain hormone that is produced by women but when used too
much of it causes breast and vaginal cancer. Not natural estrogen but synthetic
estrogen was used to increase the size of cows and poultry in could tamper with the
eggs that are produced.
I think that around this time period people had a healthier diet especially
when eating meat. If the animals ate healthy then whatever nutrients from the meat
would plus their natural protein would supply them with what they need for health.
One of the biggest reasons animals are injected with certain hormones is because
there diary and meat industries are also looking for profit. Even the eggs are rushed
to be laid so the chicken can be slaughtered quicker and sold.
This recipe is one of the most popular in my mom’s country. It was used for
so many holidays and even as a regular treat. Being raised in that time and having
experience the natural way things we’re made and how certain foods and ingredients
come together to make something good and valuable was always talked about my
family. Generation after generation made this desert even though today things are
just a little different nothing beats the old school.
